President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says there is a process of letting people join the Maldives Democratic Party MPD and that getting 50 percent support is not the way.
His comments came after former President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed expressed his desire to re-join the party but only with 50 percent support from the party after MDP lost the Presidential Election to the Opposition.
Speaking at the press conference held at the President's Office today, President Solih said that there is an established process in how people can become members of the party, it doesn’t require a particular percentage of support from the general members.
He added that people who respect the values and principles of the party know the process.
Nasheed, who is the Speaker of the Parliament, supposedly expressed his desire to return to MDP to the party's Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed.
He has yet to publically declare the wish to rejoin the party he left after losing the Presidential Primary to President Solih back in January.
After the loss, Nasheed formed a separate branch within MDP which then became a breakaway party called the Democrats. Nasheed also left MDP and then joined the Democrats and promised to divide up MDP.
