Elections Commission says it is ready to hold a public referendum on the governance system and that it is working to hold the vote on the 29th of next month.
The Commission said this a few days after the Parliament sent the resolution calling for a system change referendum to be held before the 30th of next month to the Commission.
It confirmed the receipt of the resolution and said last Thursday that it was seeking legal advice on how to proceed forward.
At a press conference held today, the Vice President of the Commission Ismail Habeeb said that after receiving legal advice on the resolution, the Commission convened for a meeting in which several members voiced questions they had about the public referendum. Habeeb said that these questions have now been forwarded to the Parliament for further clarification.
Vice President of the Elections Commission said that it is important to establish why such a vote is being taken in the first place and the members of the Commission have been unable to determine the reason behind the vote.
Habeeb also said that there are several questions that needed to be answered before such a referendum can be held and that this includes how the public should be made aware of the vote as well as clarify why the public should take part in the vote and the pros and cons of voting for both the systems.
Habeeb noted that the Commission was prepared to hold the referendum but it can only begin the work once it has answers to all the questions and when it receives the budget for the nationwide vote.
