The Parliament has accepted the resolution on governance system change for debate.

The resolution which call for a public referendum on changing the governance system of the country from a Presidential system to a parliamentary system was proposed by the MP for Hulhudhoo Constituency Ilyas Labeeb earlier this month and the debate on the resolution began today.

The Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said today he intends to conclude the parliamentary work on the resolution today.

After the debate on accepting the resolution was concluded, it was put to vote and 35 out of the 37 MPs present at the session joined the vote.

All 35 MPs voted to accept the resolution for debate.

Parliament Minority Leader MP for Central Henveriu Constituency Ali Azim then proposed to take the resolution to a Whole House Committee and this was seconded by MP for Hulhumale' Constituency Ali Niyaz.

A total of 34 MPs voted for this proposal and Speaker Nasheed said that the Whole House Committee proceedings would start tomorrow.
