The Indian High Commission in the Maldives has rejected news items circulated on online platforms that suggest that Indian officials are asking Maldivians about who they are voting for in the Presidential election.
This comes as opposition-affiliated online news outlet 'Dhiyares' reported this on several occasions. It was reported that Indian officials at the High Commission were clarifying the voting preference of Maldivians who go to the High Commission to submit visa applications.
Dhiyares also reported that Indian military troops stationed at Haa Dhaalu Hanimadhoo were asking the islanders who they intended to vote in the election.
The High Commission said via 'X' that it unequivocally rejects fake news items being circulated on online platforms seeking to malign India-Maldives relations.
The Commission further requested the Foreign Ministry and Maldives Media Council to take suitable action against those responsible for the fake news items.
It also asked authorities to guide the concerned media to write responsibly and ethically.
