Elections Commission says voting in the second round of the Presidential Election will be held on the 30th of September from 08:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.
This means voting for the second round of the election has been extended by 1 hour compared to the first round.
The first round of voting held last Saturday was from 08:00 a.m. to 04:00 p.m. with election officials promptly closing the voting queues on the dot.
Scuffles broke out at many voting stations, especially in Male' as many who joined the queue after 04:00 p.m. were denied their right to vote.
Speaking at a press briefing today, the Vice President of the Commission said that as voter turnout for the 1st round of the election was low, with the recommendation from the Election Advisory Committee, the Commission decided to extend the voting time for the next round of the election.
But the Vice President insisted that like the first round, the voting queues would be closed at prompt 05:00 p.m. and that no additional time would be given.
A total of 282,395 voters were eligible to cast their ballots for the first round with more than 20,000 new voters. But the Commission confirmed today that 56,909 voters did not cast their votes in Saturday's election.
