The Parliament has confirmed that it will not be holding any sessions this week as the country gears up for the Presidential Election scheduled for next week.
This was confirmed by the Communications Director at the Parliament Hassan Ziyau.
Ziyau said to "The Press" that this week there would not be any sessions at the Parliament and that whether or not to hold sessions next week would be decided.
While the Parliament is now into its last term for the calendar year, the third term of 2023 has so far followed a stop-start pattern with disrupted and abandoned sessions.
Under the Parliament standing order, the third term of the 19th Parliament must start on the 16th of August and end in November. But the third term of the Parliament began 5 days later and the Parliamentarians have not been able to complete a full session yet.
Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed cut short its first session of the third term held last month citing the lack of cooperation from the MPs.
The session was cut short after the floor of the parliament erupted into chaos after Speaker Nasheed decided that the compilation of the Parliamentary standing committees would be postponed till the administrative procedures were in place to allow MPs from 'The Democrats' to be appointed to the Committees.
