The Elections Commission extends the application date for election observers and monitors ahead of the September 9th Presidential Election.

At a news briefing today, the Commission said that it decided to extend the application deadline for observers and monitors as it had not received the estimated amount of applications for these duties.

Speaking at the briefing today, Vice President of the Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb said that the Commission had extended the deadline till 3:00 pm on the 15th of this month.

This deadline was set to be up at 3:00 pm today.

Only Maldivians above 18 years of age are eligible to become monitors and the individual must not be serving a sentence for crime.

Election Observers must be accredited and approved in accordance with the policies and regulations made under the Elections Act.

As for monitors, the Elections Act says that only reporters, who are approved by the Elections Commission under the Act, can monitor voting areas in the capacity of reporters.

A record-breaking 8 candidates are set to vy for the Presidency next month with the whole country now gearing up for the polls as campaigning intensify.
