Vice President of the Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb says the Commission would present its argument to the Supreme Court today over the Commission's decision to reject jailed ex-President Abdullah Yameen's candidacy for the September elections.
This comes after the former President's legal team filed a case at the country's top court to declare the legitimacy of Yameen's candidacy.
Habeeb said last night in a tweet that the Supreme Court has ordered the Commission to present its argument to the Court regarding the case.
He said that the Commission would submit its argument via form before 3 pm today.
In its response to Yameen about rejecting his candidacy, the Commission cited article 109 of the Constitution which states that an individual who puts forth candidacy for the Presidential Elections must not have been convicted of a criminal offense and sentenced to a term of more than twelve months.
But Yameen's running mate and the head of his legal team Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed said that the Commission had interpreted Article 109, subsection F wrongly.
Yameen is currently serving a jail sentence of 11 years after being convicted of money laundering and bribery last year.
