The Supreme Court of the Maldives accepts a case filed on behalf of former President Abdullah Yameen regarding his candidacy for the September Presidential Elections.

This comes after the Elections Commission rejected Yameen's candidacy application yesterday and the opposition filed a case at the Supreme Court to overturn this decision.

A media official from the Supreme Court confirmed to 'The Press' that the top court has indeed accepted the case from Yameen who is currently serving an 11-year sentence for money laundering and bribery convictions.

The Commission cited article 109 of the Constitution which states that an individual who puts forth candidacy for the Presidential Elections must not have been convicted of a criminal offense and sentenced to a term of more than twelve months.

But Yameen's running mate and the head of his legal team Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed said that the Commission had interpreted Article 109, subsection F wrongly.

He also said that the Opposition is turning to the Supreme Court to make a decision on the matter to make sure that the government cannot influence the judicial process.
