President of the Elections Commission Fuwad Thaufeeq concedes that the Commission is unable to make arrangements that would allow Maldivians living abroad to re-register online for the September Presidential Elections.

He made this announcement as many Maldivians living abroad prepare to re-register for the elections that would allow them to exercise the right to vote without having to travel back to the Maldives for the election.

Fuwad said that Maldives living in cities like Colombo, Trivandrum, London, and Kuala Lumpur should submit their re-registration application form to the Maldivian embassies in the cities.

He apologized on behalf of the Commission for not being able to make arrangements to allow online re-registration for those living abroad.

While re-registration for the September election is now open, the Commission has said before that it would only allow online re-registration till the 29th of this month.

It clarified that this timeline was set to allow timely system verifications and to avoid a person being denied their right to vote due to a technical delay or error.

The Commission urged voters to avoid last-minute re-registrations.

The Commission recently published the voters' list and invited complaints for the list between the 11th and 22nd of last month. In the period, the Commission received 551 complaints with most complaints focused on including deceased people in the voters list.

The Elections Commission announced that there are 282,672 eligible voters for the September Presidential Election and that it would place 604 ballot boxes across the country and abroad.
