President of Maldives Democratic Party MDP Mohamed Nasheed resigns from the party 20 years after he help co-found the largest political party in the country.
In a letter addressed to the Chairperson of MDP, which he shared via Twitter, the former President and current Speaker of the Parliament Nasheed said that he believed staying on with the party is not the best decision given the situation in the country.
Nasheed went on to inform the Chairperson of his decision to leave MDP.
This comes amid increasing turmoil within the political landscape especially after Nasheed's faction within MDP moved to form their own party after becoming discontent with the party following Nasheed's defeat to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the Party Presidential Primary back in January.
Though Nasheed remained as President of MDP until today, more than 50 MPs representing MDP at the Parliament submitted a no-confidence motion against him earlier this month.
Nasheed recused himself from chairing any more parliamentary sessions until his no-confidence motion is resolved which brought the Parliament to a standstill as a no-confidence motion was submitted against Deputy Speaker MP Eva Abdullah.
Under parliament's Standing Order, only the Speaker can chair a session that hears a no-confidence vote against the Deputy Speaker.
