Speaker of the Parliament and President of Maldives Democratic Party MDP Mohamed Nasheed says it is becoming increasingly difficult to remain with the party in the current situation.

Speaking at a news conference held at the Parliament today, Nasheed said that after the Presidential Elections in September, MDP shall not remain under the chains of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and that the newly formed 'The Democrats' would take away a bulk of MDP's voter base.

Nasheed further said that even with the formation of the new party, he remained with MDP to take all the party members to 'The Democrats and that he was determined to see it through.

The Speaker then accused the government of delaying the process to register the Democrats as a new party. He said that the government is hindering this with the view that it might be beneficial to the government but the new party does not even have to go to the Elections Commission to get itself registered.

He noted that along with the case of the Democrats, the Elections Commission's justification for the decision to dissolve MRM also had descrepencies.
