Bank of Maldives BML says it has blocked ChatGPT-associated transactions because of an increase in fraudulent transactions associated with the merchant.

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI and released in November 2022 that can write and debug computer programs, mimic the style of celebrity CEOs and write business pitches, compose music, teleplays, fairy tales, and student essays, answer test questions (sometimes, depending on the test, at a level above the average human test-taker), write poetry and song lyrics, etc.

In a tweet, BML said that due to an increase in fraudulent transactions associated with ChatGPT, transactions at this merchant have been temporarily blocked for customers' safety.

BML said that merchant data compromises can impact millions of customers globally, and protecting its customers is the bank's number one priority.

It further apologized for any inconvenience caused by this decision.

Earlier today, BML introduced a digital banking assistant aptly named 'Aaya' that can chat with the Bank's customers in both English and Dhivehi.

BML said that 'Aaya' is available 24 hours through BML's website, Facebook Messenger, Viber, and WhatsApp to help customers with their day-to-day banking questions.
