Guriadhoo Constituents are casting their votes today to elect a new MP for its now-vacant seat on the parliament.
Voting began at 08:00 am in all three of the islands that form the constituency and these islands include Guraidhoo, Gulhi, and Maafushi.
A total of 3,423 are eligible to vote in the election. The Elections Commission has said that two ballot boxes have been placed in both Guraidhoo and Maafushi while only one ballot box has been placed in Gulhi. An additional box has been placed in Male' for those of the constituency living in the capital city.
Voting in the by-election is set to continue till 04:00 pm in the evening.
MDP, MNP, and the opposition coalition are competing in the by-election to fill the now-vacant parliamentary seat for Guriadhoo Constituency.
MDP has fielded Ibrahim Shaz while the opposition has given its ticket to the brother of late Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riza whose death vacated in the seat back in February.
Ali Arif is competing for the seat for MNP.
Ballot counting would begin 30 minutes after voting closes and the official result would be announced next Wednesday.
