Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed says the law must be amended in order to increase the participation of women in the parliament.
Speaking on the occasion of International Women's Day being celebrated today, Speaker of the Parliament Nasheed said that many in the Maldives now think about the involvement of women in the parliament.
He said that the political parties must bear the responsibility of bringing changes to the Constitution that would amend how the legislative house is composed.
The Speaker further said that all must work to ensure that there is an easier pathway for women to be representatives in the Parliament.
While the Speaker called for more women parliamentarians, the Parliament in which he is the Speaker only has 4 women MPs. They include the MP for Galolhu Uthuru Constituency Eva Abdullah who is also the Vice Speaker of the Parliament, MP for Hinnvaru Constituency Jeehan Mahmood, MP for Addu Meedhoo Constituency Rozaina Adam and MP for Thulhaadhoo Constituency Hisan Husaain.
