Waste Management Corporation WAMCO has stopped sweeping Male' and Villimale after its contract with the Male' City Council expired.
In a statement, WAMCO said that as Male' City Council did not renew the contract with the Corporation, it would not be sweeping and cleaning the streets, public parks, and area in Male' and Villimale'.
It also said that WAMCO would not be collecting waste from the local market and travelers markets in Male'.
WAMCO further noted that it would also stop picking up waste that is illegally left all over Male'.
But assured that it would continue collecting waste from all its registered customers regardless of the contract cancellation with the City Council.
Male' City Council has said before that it decided not to renew the agreement with WAMCO because it wanted to make the cleaning and waste collection services in Male' and Villimale more efficient.
The Council said that WAMCO was paid MVR 2.5 million per month but more and more waste has been left on the roadside and many are complaining about it.
It further said that the public was complaining because WAMCO was not providing adequate services.
