Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed says the spread of hate on social media is seemingly growing in the Maldives.

This comes after a key member of the opposition named Abbas Adil Riza called for an arson attack against the Indian High Commission in the Maldives.

He said via Twitter that the Indian government had ordered the arson attacks in Addu City back in February of 2012 and that these acts have yet to be avenged. He added that the Indian High Commission is a good place to start the attacks.

Commissioner Hameed said today that any incitement of violence or encouragement of acts of terrorism will be taken seriously and investigated with due process by the Police.

He further said that the spread of hate on social media is seemingly growing in the Maldives and that the Police are working with all stakeholders to effectively tackle the problem.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi described the call for an arson attack against the Indian High Commission an act of terror and said that any such acts would not be tolerated.
