President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has submitted his application form to compete in the MDP Primary to elect a presidential candidate for next year's election.
In a tweet, MP for Kinbidhoo Constituency Mohamed Nashiz confirmed that President Solih has submitted his application form along with the backing of more than 20,000 MDP members.
President Solih submitted the application form on the deadline for the submission ahead of the Primary scheduled for next month.
Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed submitted his application form last Thursday along with the backing of more than 500 MDP members.
Ahead of the Primary, MDP appears to be segregated into two factions with one backing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the other supporting Speaker Nasheed.
Most of the members of MDP's national council appear to side with the President while those around Nasheed are his most loyal supporters and key original members of the country's largest political party.
