Former President Abdullah Yameen has called on the government to reveal the details of the letter President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sent to the Prime Minister of Mauritius over the Chagos dispute and that he would not accept the government's decision on the matter.

Speaking at an opposition meeting, Yameen said that because the current administration has changed its decision over the Chagos islands, the risk of the Maldives losing some parts of its territories is on the verge of becoming a reality. He said that an opposition government would overturn this administration's decision on the matter.

Aiming harsh criticism at the government, the former president said that the issue was that the government decided to leave part of the Maldivian Exclusive Economic zone to Mauritius at the behest of India.

Yameen called on the government to reveal the details of the letter sent to the Prime Minister of Mauritius on behalf of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and said that the Home Minister was unable to do so.

I am angry with the Government's decision. It is a very irresponsible decision. As a President, he should not have sent such a letter. Such a letter should not even be honored. Because even a President's letter that is unlawful and against the protocols should not be honored.

While the Government had overturned its decision to support Mauritius in its bid to wrestle the ownership of the Chagos islands from the United Kingdom, the opposition as well as members from the majority ruling party MDP have voiced their anger.

The opposition claims that India has a say in the reversed decision which the Government adamantly denies saying that no country had influenced its decision.
