The parliament has thrown out the amendment that states that the government should stop giving an allowance to former Parliamentarians.

This Bill on Amendment to the Parliamentary privileges and powers act was sponsored by the MP for Vilimale Constituency Ahmed Usham.

Only 5 MPs who took part in the vote to pass the bill voted for the amendment while the remaining 31 MPs voted to reject the amendment.

MP Usham submitted the bill last July and it states that the Parliament is an institution that should decide on matters that are close to the public and their views.

The bill has proposed to cut off the allowances given to former MPs that are unjust to the services they are provided.

The first reading of the bill was carried out on the 22nd of August.

The current article in the law states that MPs who completed one tenure as parliamentarians would receive 30 percent of his/her salary while those MPs who have completed 2 tenures will receive 45 percent of their salaries as allowance.

Ex-MPs and their families also get free health insurance and former MPs are also given an official passport.
