The parliament has thrown out a motion calling on authorities to release the protesters arrested at the demonstration organized by the opposition coalition yesterday in support of fishermen across the country.
The motion was submitted by the MP for Faresmaathoda constituency Hussain Mohamed Latheef.
In the motion, he said that police have used undue force to break up the protest yesterday and arrested 10 protesters.
MP Hussain said police actions yesterday went against the basis of the Constitution and that it had narrowed the freedom of expression. He added that Police had also tainted the sancity of some women that took part in the protests.
He added that this was orchestrated by the government and that it was using the Police to obstruct the rights and responsibilities of the opposition.
His motion calls for an inquiry into the matter and also called for the immediate release of those arrested in yesterday's protests.
But the motion was subsequently thrown out after 23 out of the 31 MPs present at today's session voted against the motion. Only 8 MPs voted for the motion and 1 member abstained from voting.
At yesterday's demonstration, protesters called for the resignation of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and called for the government to fulfil its pledges made to fishermen under its blue economy.
