Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Lixin says the Chinese government would be pushing for the projects stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives while the spread is currently under control.

In an interview with Maldivian state broadcaster PSM, Ambassador Wang who was appointed to the post a year ago said that during her tenure, she will work closely with the Maldivian side to push forward the early completion of the Expansion and Upgradation of the Velana International Airport Project and Micro-grid Seawater Desalination Project, so that the Maldivian people can benefit from these projects at an early date.

She said that the COVID-19 pandemic has stalled the implementation of some projects such as the China-Maldives Eye Center in Hulhumale and that the Chinese side would actively push these projects to be launched as soon as possible while the epidemic is under control.

Ambassador Wang noted that China hopes to expand cooperation between China and Maldives in the fields of health, environmental protection, the blue economy as well as agriculture and fishery, to help implement the strategy of diversification of the Maldivian Economy.

She said that China is also willing to strengthen cooperation with the Maldives in addressing climate change, jointly implement the Paris Agreement and help the Maldives overcome practical difficulties.

She added that the Maldives is welcome to take part in the cooperation projects for sustainable development under Global Development Initiative proposed by the Chinese side.
