Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed Miuvaan says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih would travel to the United Kingdom tomorrow for the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II who passed away last Thursday.
Speaking to reporters today, Miuvaan said that the President was traveling to the UK at the kingdom's invitation.
Miuvaan also addressed reports that suggest the government is spending excessively for the President's trip to the UK with an estimated value of MVR 3 million for the trip.
He said that the government won't be spending such an amount on the trip and that the trip would cost way less as there is no official meeting scheduled during the visit to the UK.
The late queen is set to be buried on Monday with over 2,000 state and foreign dignitaries invited to the ceremony held for the longest-reigning British Monarch.
President Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed on Wednesday afternoon signed the book of condolence opened at the British High Commission in the Maldives in the memory of the late Queen.
In their joint message, the President and First Lady described Her Majesty's long and distinguished reign as the finest example of loyalty to duty, sacrifice, and selfless service, as well as the love for her people. They said that she served the UK, the Commonwealth, and the wider international community with the utmost dignity and dedication.
