Male City Council says it would be less time-consuming if the council itself gave cleaning and waste collection services in Male' and Villimale.

It said this after passing not to renew the contract between the Council and Waste Management Corporation WAMCO for the cleaning and waste collection services in the capital city.

The decision was made at the Council meeting held last Thursday.

WAMCO had issued a statement voicing its concerns about the Council's decision and stated that if it gave these services, the cost would be three times higher.

In response, the Council issued a statement today saying that it decided not to renew the agreement with WAMCO because it wanted to make the cleaning and waste collection services in Male' and Villimale more efficient.

The Council said that WAMCO was paid MVR 2.5 million per month but more and more waste has been left on the roadside and many are complaining about it.

It further said that the public was complaining because WAMCO was not providing adequate services.

The Council highlighted its staff is picking up waste and cleaning public spaces in Male' like the artificial beach, Rasfannnu, and Republic Square.

It noted that once the Council starts giving the services, it would be less time consuming while it would be easier to monitor the work and in turn, it would make it easier for the residents of Male'.

The Council assured that it would cooperate with relevant local authorities.
