Education Ministry has confirmed that it has suspended a teacher working at a school in Male' for showing an explicit video to one of his students.
The Ministry said that the incident was reported on the 17th of this month. It said that the teacher had lured the student to his home in the guise of giving tuition but had then shown an explicit video to the student.
It said that the teacher was suspended on the day the case was reported to the Ministry. The Ministry said that it had forwarded the case to the Police and a formal investigation has now been launched.
While it has been 7 days since the incident, a group of civilians had yesterday dragged the teacher to Hulhumale's Phase II Hiya flat area and publically humiliated him.
The video of the attack has now been circulated on social media and shows the group surrounding the teacher while verbally abusing him and questioning him about the incident.
As the video goes on the response from the crowd becomes more intense with one woman asking the man what he had done to a student studying in the 4th grade.
The crowd then demanded that the man strip to his underwear and make him hold a sign that says he was a homosexual.
Police had said that the incident was reported to them last night around 10:00 pm and that the man was now under police custody. Police confirmed that the man was a 29-year local man and that they were investigating the matter.
