Home Minister Imran Abdullah has issued a veiled threat at those accused of having same-sex relations saying that actions must be taken against those who have committed grave sins.
This comes after several videos of politicians having same-sex relations had been leaked on social media.
Imran said that action must be taken when some are committing such grave sins that go against all the aspects of religion and that tear the social fabric of the society and those that would incur the wrath of God.
His strong comments follow as many on social media have aimed criticism at the authorities for failing to arrest any of the locals accused of having same-sex relations.
While the Bangladeshi man seen in three of the leaked videos has been arrested, it has been reported that he was apprehended for blackmail charges and not for committing sodomy which is a sin in Islam and a criminal offense in the Maldives.
Locals accused of having relations with the man include the brother and lawyer of the Speaker of the Parliament Nazim Sattar and former MP Mohamed Nasheed (colonel).
Also, the most recent video featured a police officer along with the arrested foreigner. Police had said that the officer has since been suspended and was now under investigation.
