Lawyers of former MP for Horafushi Constituency Mohamed Ismail say he was arrested illegally and that police had not been able to show any evidence that would warrant his arrest.

Mohmed Ismail, who is a key figure in the opposition PPM, was arrested in relation to the violence that occurred at the Yoga Day Event held last month after several protesters gathered outside the event location and barged in on the activities.

At a press conference held last night, his lawyer Ali Shahu said that Mohamed Ismail of arrested illegally and that he had not even gone to the national stadium where the Yoga Day event was held.

Shahu said that his client had not done anything to incite violence at the event that day and that he was being held under custody based on an intelligence report.

Mohamed Ismail was first remanded in custody for 5 days but since has been remanded in custody for 30 days.

PPM Council Razzan was also arrested in relation to the violence but he has since been released.

A total of 21 people were apprehended following the events at the stadium on that day and those arrested include religious leaders too.
