Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has made allegations saying that there is a blackmail ring within the Police and that photos and videos of 43 individuals have been taken.

His comments came after controversial photos and videos of two MPs were leaked on Twitter including MP for Henvieru Uthuru constituency Hussain Shameem and MP for Hoarafushi Ahmed Saleem.

Also, an indecent video of the Speaker's brother and lawyer Nazim Sattar circulated on social media on the weekend in which he is alleged to have been having same-sex relations with a Bangladeshi national.

In messages to a social media group with MDP members, Nasheed aimed heavy allegations against the Police and said that these photos and videos are being taken with the help of the Police.

Nasheed said that it has been two years since the blackmail ring had been active in the Police and that they have collected photos and videos of 43 individuals.

Nasheed added that this was how governments were run.

A police media official denied these allegations and said to some newspapers that while the investigation into the blackmailing incidents was ongoing, they are yet to uncover evidence of a blackmail ring within the police.
