Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has thrown out the emergency motion submitted on the recently leaked videos and photos of some MPs having same-sex relations.
The motion was submitted by the MP for Naifaru Constituency Ahmed Shiyam and MP for Nolhivaram Mohamed Nasheed (Mosta).
In the motion, MP Shiyam said sodomy and group sex have become common in the society and that perpetrators of such degrading crimes should be stopped and that they should be given just punishment under Islamic laws.
In his motion, MP Nasheed also highlighted these crimes as well as the availability of narcotics, and massage parlors are now at alarming levels and called for immediate action to resolve these issues.
At the beginning of today's session, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said that the leaked photos and videos are allegations made against individuals and that he does not believe that the parliament should debate such allegations.
Nasheed also said that it goes against the principles of the country to harm anyone's reputation without determining the chain of custody of the leaked content first.
Opposition MPs present at today's session protested against Nasheed's decision to throw out the motions and the session was disrupted for a while. But the session continued after the interruption with Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam answering questions from the floor today.
Recently, controversial photos and videos of two MPs have been leaked on Twitter including MP for Henvieru Uthuru constituency Hussain Shameem and MP for Hoarafushi Ahmed Saleem.
