Maldives Food and Drug Authority MFDA has ordered local shops to display the expiry dates of eggs before selling them to customers.

The Authority had said that they had received several complaints that shops in the Male' are selling rotten eggs.

It said that consuming rotten eggs would pose numerous health problems and that it could also be the reason for an outbreak of food-borne diseases.

MFDA said that eggs stored in cold temperatures can be kept for 3 months while eggs stored in non-cold conditions would go bad within 28 days.

It also said that once the expiry date for the eggs is up, the products are most likely to go bad.

MDFA further said that even if the expiry date has not been reached if the eggs are stored in unsuitable conditions, the chance of them going bad is high.

The Authority urged shops to store the eggs at the optimum temperature and to display the expiry dates of the eggs when it is shelved to be sold.

It also urged those buying eggs to be mindful of their purchases.
