A huge whale measuring around 50 feet had been found dead in the waters of Vaavu Atoll.
Speaking to 'The Press' about the discovery, President of Vaavu Atoll Council Shujau Ali said that the whale could not be smaller than 50 feet and that they were yet to determine the species of the dead whale.
Shujau said that the huge carcass was first spotted by fishermen near the Madangiri lagoon in Vaavu Atoll.
He said that based on the water current and winds, the carcass is moving towards Maduvaree island between Vaavu Thinadhoo and Vaavu Felidhoo. He added that officials from the Thinadhoo council were now in the area.
Shujau said that the Thinadhoo Council was working to determine where the whale carcass would beach and to make sure that it does not beach on an inhabited island as it would pose problems for the inhabitants.
He confirmed that the council had reported the sighting to local authorities and that they were working with them.
