Teachers from both Maldives National University (MNU) and the Islamic University of the Maldives (IUM) have staged a silent strike demanding a salary for them too.
This comes after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had announced earlier this month that his government would increase the take-home pay for education sector workers starting this month.
While the hike came into this month, this change does mean an increase in salaries for university teachers, they had staged a silent strike against this by donning black today.
Strikers have demanded a hike in salaries for them and have called on the authorities not to cast them aside while enforcing the salary changes.
Details of Salary increments for teachers;
Teachers' Salaries
- Rank 1- Salary hike from MVR 10,889 to MVR 13,266 (a13 percent increase)
- Rank 2- Salary hike from MVR 13,089 to MVR 19,467 ( a 50 percent increase)
- Rank 3- Salary hike from MVR 15,135 to MVR 20,895 (a 38 percent increase)
Principals' salaries
- Rank 1- Salary hike from MVR 16,000 to 30,000 (an 82 percent increase)
- Rank 2- Salary hike from MVR 20,000 to 33,000 (a 59 percent increase)
- Rank 3- Salary hike from MVR 12,000 to 20,000 (a 38 percent increase)
Announcing the new salary details, President Solih had said that the new changes would resolve challenges to attracting qualified principals to work in schools outside Malé City.
