Opposition party PPM says the government cannot curtail the freedom of expression by issuing decrees that go against the constitution.
This comes after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih issued a presidential decree last Thursday labeling the opposition-led anti-India campaign 'IndiaOut' as a threat to national security and essentially banned activities under the campaign.
The police had then proceeded to remove the anti-India banners put up by the opposition outside buildings affiliated with them.
In a tweet, PPM said that more anti-India banners would pop up in Male' and shared pictures of more banners being put up in different locations in the capital city.
PPM also said that the government cannot hinder freedom of speech by issuing decrees that defy the constitution.
In the decree, President Solih had said that the campaign aimed at inciting hatred towards India has been deemed a national security threat by the National Security Council.
President said that it is very clear how the campaign has now become a threat to national security and that it aims to create discord and disharmony across the country.
