Foreign Ministry says the last 9 Maldivians evacuated from Ukraine amid war in the country would return home to the Maldives today.
This comes after the Foreign Ministry confirmed that all 9 remaining Maldivians in Ukraine had safely arrived in the Hungarian capital of Budapest last Thursday.
The Ministry said that this includes 5 students and a family of three stuck in the Russian border city of Kharkiv and another Maldivian national stuck in Dnipro.
It said that the last group of Maldivians are traveling home now and will return to the Maldives today. The Ministry added that the government had assisted in their departure from Hungary.
Meanwhile, in an update from Belarus, the Ministry said that the government will provide financial assistance for those who wish to return back to the Maldives.
It said that 6 students have opted to return, and their return has been facilitated with them set to return this week.
The Foreign Ministry stated that classes are ongoing in person as usual in all 3 cities of Belarus where Maldivian students are studying (Grodno, Vitebsk & Gommel).
It said that the Government of Maldives had reached out to all universities and they have individually responded that the classes will go on normally, as they do not foresee the Russia-Ukraine conflict affecting the studies or students.
The Ministry added that students in Belarus had reported normalcy in the country amid raised tension in the region.
As for Russia, the Ministry said that Kursk University, where most Maldivian students are studying in, gave the green signal to the students that classes will be switched to online mode, following requests from the Maldivian government.
It added that the government will provide financial assistance for those who wish to return back to the Maldives.
