Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed says MDP should hold discussions with other political parties about the amendments it wants to bring to the Constitution.
Nasheed said while speaking during the debate on the amendment on how to compile the Judicial Service Commission as proposed by MP for Mahibadhoo constituency Ahmed Thoriq.
This is the third time MP Thoriq had proposed the amendment to the parliament floor after he had made the same submission in 2020 and 2021.
Speaking at the parliament session today, Nasheed said that MDP had established a table for its National Congress on how it would work to amend the constitution.
Nasheed noted that these amendments cannot be brought based on just what MDP wants and that all the political parties should be in consensus on this matter.
Meanwhile, Maldives National Party MNP's leader and MP for Dhagethi Constituency Mohamed Nazim had expressed his party's support for the amendment bill yesterday.
The party said that it would discuss the matter at the party's congress and that the party's congress would be held later this year.
While political reasonings behind the bill have varied, Speaker of the parliament Nasheed had said last week that it was important to have a political figure on JSC to give it more political power.
