Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed says war between Ukraine and Russia would have all sorts of negative and unforeseen ramifications.

His comments via Twitter came as tensions rise on the Ukraine-Russia border as the former deflected accusations of an imminent attack but had been amassing troops to the region.

In his Tweet, the former President expressed his worry over the growing tensions between the two countries.

Nasheed pointed out that Ukrainians and Russians are some of the country's biggest visitors and if war breaks out, it will have all sorts of negative and unforeseen ramifications.

He added that the Government should be mindful of possible impacts to the Maldives over the matter.

The Speaker's point rang true as more than 28,600 tourists had arrived in the Maldives from both these two countries in the last month alone. This includes 5,352 from Ukraine and 23,341 tourists from the Russian Federation, making it one of the biggest tourist markets for the Maldives.

The heightened tension on the Russia-Ukraine border had prompted the Maldivian government to warn its citizens not to travel to Ukraine at the moment.

It had also urged those currently in Ukraine to follow the instructions given by the Ukrainian government and to take all cautionary measures.
