Police in the Maldives has officially begun using body-worn cameras.

The body-worn camera for police was officially inaugurated today by the Minister of Environment Aminath Shauna.

Top officials from the Police were present at the ceremony held today. Speaking at the ceremony Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said that the body-worn cameras for police would initially be used in Male' City and Addu City.

The Commissioner further said that once the Police start using the body cams, it would offer more protection to the Police as well as the public.

Hameed added that the body cams can be used to make police officers more accountable while performing their duty.

Police had last year announced that it was looking to acquire 1,400 body cams but later cut the number to 400.
