MP for Maafannu Uthuru Constituency Imthiyaz Fahmy has decided to compete for the vacant chairperson post at the ruling MDP.
He announced his decision on Twitter amid speculation on Social Media that he would compete for the post.
The post became vacant yesterday and MDP had given 7 days for interested party members to submit their applications for the vacant spot. The post carries a 5-year term and the election for the post would be held next April.
In addition to MP Imthiyaz, Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail and MD of STO Hussain Amr Mohamed Rasheed have also announced their intention to compete for the spot.
MP for Henveiru Hulhangu Constituency Hassan Latheef had been the last MDP Chairperson having completed his term yesterday.
Influential party members such as Party Leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed and current defense Minister Mariya Didi have both fulfilled the post in the past.
Several party posts would be filled in the April election.
