Health Ministry says it would investigate the incident in which a woman's intestine was cut during a c-section performed at the Addu Equatorial hospital.
The woman was admitted to the hospital on the 23rd of last month and a c-section was performed on the patient that night.
It was reported that the woman had complaint of being unable to pass motion three days after the surgery and had breathing difficulties. Nurses at the hospital had told the patient that she was gastric after the C-section.
But the woman had a scan done after she experienced excruciating pain while in the toilet four days after surgery and the hospital had informed the patient that a blockage had formed near her intestine and had explained that it would be treated by clearing out the intestine. They had assured that surgery was not required to rectify the problem.
However, the patient was flown to Male' and admitted to ADK hospital as her condition did not improve and ADK hospital had informed the patient that an infection has formed in her intestine and that she should have immediate surgery.
The hospital also had said that the patient's intestine was nearly severed.
Regarding the matter, the Health Ministry said that Addu Equatorial Hospital is operated under an independent board. But as it is under the Ministry's responsibility to regulate the medical practices in the country, it would be further investigating the unfortunate incident.
The Ministry added that it would take the necessary action if required.
