Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed that a 73-year-old local man has passed away due to COVID-19 earlier this morning.
HPA said that the man had died around 01:54 am while under treatment at the Hulhumale' Medical Facility.
Sources have confirmed that the man had been on ventilator support when he passed away.
They have also said that the man had died a week after being taken to the facility.
This is the 8th person to due from COVID-19 in the country since the start of the new year and the 273rd person to succumb to the pandemic since April 2020.
Most of those who have died from the pandemic include elderly locals with underlying health conditions but few younger people have also died from the illness.
HPA had said last night that currently there are 16,673 active cases of the pandemic in the country and that 57 are now hospitalized for further treatment.
A total of 125,590 people have now tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives since March 2020.
