Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed an additional 2,609 new cases of COVID-19 in the country as the current wave continues to wreak havoc in the country.

The Agency reported that out of the new cases, 1,427 new cases were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area where the positivity rate remains well above 30 percent.

HPA also said that 783 new cases were confirmed from the inhabited islands and that another 109 cases were reported from operational resorts.

HPA further added that it was yet to confirm the location of another 290 cases reported yesterday.

The new cases take the total number of COVID cases reported since March 2020 to a staggering 122,777.

HPA said that currently there are 16,666 active cases of the pandemic in the country and that 57 COVID patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.

The COVID global pandemic has killed 272 people in the Maldives since April 2020 with the latest death coming last night. HPA had said that a 50-year-old local woman admitted at Alifu Dhaalu Dhagethi Health center had passed away due to the pandemic.
