Maldives National Defense Force MNDF and the Police have begun a joint security operation in the Greater Male' Area.
In a joint statement, security services said that it had begun an operation to ensure the safety and security of the public as well as to maintain peace and order in the capital Male'.
They said that they started the operation yesterday and that the operation had been named 'Gulhigenn' operation.
The security services thanked the public for their cooperation during such security operations conducted to safeguard the country.
The announcement of the security operation comes amid social media speculation that the security services were combating a potential terrorist attack.
Many police officers and MNDF personal had been seen patrolling the streets of Male' shortly after the security services' announcement.
But there had been no reports of any raids or inspection of the property yet.
