A member of the Anti-Corruption Commission Ibrahim Shakeel has resigned as the parliament contemplates axing all members on the Commission.
This was confirmed by the Speaker of the parliament who chaired the parliamentary sitting held today out of session to debate on whether or not to dismiss all members of the ACC.
At the beginning of the sitting, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed said that the parliament had received a letter from the President's Office confirming the resignation of ACC member Shakeel.
With his resignation, only 3 members remain on the ACC including Mariyam Shiuna, Fathimath Anool, and Aishath Abdullah. ACC member Ali Ashraf had also resigned from his post.
In the parliamentary sitting held today, the motion to dismiss the remaining three members of the ACC was read and this was recommended by Parliamentary Committee on Independent Entities.
As per the procedure, the motion was then forwarded to the committee for further deliberation and ACC members were given three days to answer to the committee report on the deliberation.
The report then would be debated upon at parliament before MPs take a vote on the matter.
The decision to pursue the dismissal of the ACC member was made after an audit of their work through the Auditor General's Office. The Audit showed that the ACC was incapable of investigating cases and had no power to act with authority.
While some cases have been caught in years-long investigations, there are more than 300 cases that have not yet been concluded.
