The opposition coalition has called on the businessmen in the country to comment and express their concerns about the government's request to extend the Public Bank Account PBA overdraw from the Parliament.
In a letter to the parliament, Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer had requested for extension of one year starting from April 26, 2022.
Minister Ameer had said that although the economy had stabilized after the tourism industry had revived, financial challenges remained as the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is the third time the government had asked for an extension to overdraw from the PBA.
MP from the opposition had today scheduled an impromptu news conference after saying that they did not get a chance to express their concerns at the parliamentary session held today.
In the news conference, MP for Maavashu constituency and former Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed aimed a dig at the Vice Speaker of the Parliament by saying that her actions were akin to that of a parliamentary official from communist North Korea.
Saeed went on to say that the current government is likely to accumulate a record debt by 2023 and that the government requesting an overdraw is worrying.
The opposition also called on businesses to voice their concerns about the government's recent request.
