Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali says 30 individuals have been released from their jobs for alleged sexual abuse in the school environment.

The Minister said this while speaking at the parliament today.

She said under different laws, the Education Ministry is mandated to make the school environment a safe and secure place for students.

The Minister noted that many steps have been taken to ensure this and that each school has an officer that would inform the relevant authorities if such a case arises from the school.

Minister Dr. Aishath highlighted that the Ministry had conducted investigations against 40 individuals who had been accused of sexual offenses at the school environment and 30 individuals had been fired from their jobs.

She added that 7 others are currently suspended due to such accusations and investigations.

Her comments came as the country reeled from the news that a 63-year-old woman had been arrested for alleged sexual abuse against a 4-year-old girl in Galolhu school last month.

On the matter, the Minister said decisive actions had been taken in the case and more CCTV has been installed in the school.
