The Supreme Court bench presiding over the appeals case of former President Abdullah Yameen says if both the prosecution and his defense finish making their case at today's hearing, the court would decide on releasing the ex-president on bail next Monday.
Yameen's defense had submitted 22 appeal points in the trial to overturn the sentence given to him by the Criminal Court for money laundering and accepting bribes back in 2019.
It took his lawyer's team five hearings held on four days to finish submit all their appeal points while the Prosecution refuted these points in just one hearing.
In today's hearing, both sides were given the chance to offer rebuttals to the side by the court.
At today's hearing, the Chief judge presiding over the trial, Judge Mahaaz Ali Zahir said after counter-arguments by both sides, the defendant would be given the chance to submit any new evidence to further appeal his case.
He also said that the court is aiming to complete these proceedings at today's hearing and if all the proceedings go as planned that the court would decide on the ex-President's bail release on the hearing scheduled for next Monday.
The Judge also said that the court would further decide on whether or not to delay Yameen's jail sentence as well.
The Ex-President is seeking to overturn the Criminal Court's decision issued against him on 29th November 2019 where he was found guilty of money laundering and subsequently given a jail sentence of 5 years and a fine of USD 5 million.
