A snake has been discovered in a warehouse located in Maafannu ward of Male' City today.
A police media official speaking to "The Press" said that report of the discovery came in around 11:00 am.
The official also said that Maldives National Defense Force MNDF had been active on the scene of the discovery.
Sources have said that the snake discovered today is a Burmese Python and it is one of the largest species of snakes.
It is native to a large area of Southeast Asia and is listed as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of nature, Red list of threatened species.
This species of snakes can grow up to 16 ft to 20 and is believed to be highly poisonous.
Authorities have yet to comment on how the reptile was smuggled into the country as MNDF had not given a comment on the matter.
Snakes are prohibited in the Maldives under the law but these reptiles are smuggled into the country from time to time.
