Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed the death of a 10-year-old girl who had been ill with COVID-19.

HPA said via Twitter that last night at 12:10 am a 10-year-old Maldivian female admitted at IGMH / ER had passed away. HPA said that this is the 170th person to die from the illness in the Maldives since April 2020.

She is the first child to die from COVID-19 in the Maldives with all other individuals who died from the illness in the country well above 20-years of age.

HPA had warned recently that a high number of children were testing positive for COVID-19 in the latest pandemic wave.

Yesterday, HPA had said last month 381 children below the age of 1 had tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives.

Meanwhile, the Agency had confirmed 9 COVID deaths in the country on the first day of the new month and the situation still remains precarious. Last month had been the most fatal month in the country since the Maldives was hit with the pandemic last year.
