Maldives National Defense Force MNDF has confirmed the death of Lance Corporal Hussain Farish in a swimming accident in Laamu Atoll Kadhoo today.
MNDF said that the Lance Corporal and three fellow soldiers had went snorkeling during their off-duty hours today and that Lance Corporal Farish had been swept away by a strong current.
It said another soldier had tried to rescue Farish but had drowned himself. MNDF said that this soldier had been rescued and rushed to the hospital for treatment. It added that the other two solider involved were left unharmed.
MNDF also said that a search and rescue mission had been mobilized with MNDF divers searching the area for the missing serviceman.
It reported that MNDF divers had later spotted the body of Lance Corporal Farish on the sea bed and that he had been dead.
MNDF had said that the incident was reported around 05:40 and that his body had been discovered around 09:00 pm.
