The first 100,000 doses of Covishield vaccine procured from the Serum Institute of India by the Maldives has arrived in the country today.

The Foreign Ministry said that this is the first batch of vaccines supplied to the Maldives under the Vaccine Purchase Agreement signed between the Ministry of Health, Maldives, Serum Institute of India Private Limited, and Serum Institute Life Sciences Private Limited on 23 March 2021, for purchase of 200,000 doses of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 Corona Virus Vaccine (Recombinant) Covishield vaccine.

This is the 3rd consignment of the Covsheild vaccine sent by India after it had donated 200,000 doses of the vaccine in January and February of this year.

The Maldives had also earlier received 12,000 doses of Covishield vaccine through the COVAX facility.

Currently, authorities in the Maldives are administering the china-developed Sinopharm vaccine in the Greater Male' Area with those who missed out on the 1st dose of the Covisheild vaccine are now receiving the first dose of the china-developed vaccine.

Health Protection Agency HPA had urged yesterday that all between the ages of 18-60 years should get their first doses of the vaccine before the upcoming month of Ramadan as vaccination timings are likely to be cut down in the holy month.

HPA had also said that the Covishield vaccine would now be only given in the Male' Area as the 2nd dose of the vaccine
